Urban Sprouts is a nonprofit school garden program that serves low-income youth from San Francisco’s underserved neighborhoods.

The program teaches youth to grow, harvest, prepare and eat vegetables from their school garden in order to help them become more engaged in school, eat better, exercise more and connect with the environment and each other.

Urban Sprouts uses garden-based education to:

  • Improve students’ learning in science and their ecoliteracy (environmental awareness and responsibility)
  • Improve students’ nutrition and physical fitness
  • Build community involvement within urban schools
  • Help youth and their families take action to improve food access and environmental justice in their communities.

Each year, Urban Sprouts works with over 550 youth at five San Francisco public middle and high schools. For more information about this program and to learn how you can incorporate garden-based education in your school, visit their website.
