Farmers' Market Finders

Farmers' Market Finders

A great way to get excited about cooking is to visit your local farmers' market, where you'll find in-season produce and the freshest meats, breads and cheeses. You can even talk to the farmers about all the different varieties of the items they are selling and ask how they are grown or made. And it's always fun to pick out a few different kinds of fruits and veggies for a "taste test" when you get back home!

Several organizations have made it easy to find a farmers' market in your neighborhood. Local Harvest's website enables you to look up farmers' markets, family farms and other sources of sustainably grown food in your area where you can buy fresh produce, grass-fed meats and many other goodies. It also has information about CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) co-ops, which will often deliver food straight from the farm right to your door!

Another useful site is the USDA's Farmers' Market Search tool, which lets you look up farmers' markets by state, city and county. You can also use this tool to find out if vendors at these markets accept WIC vouchers and/or credit or debit cards so that you come prepared.

Don't forget to bring a few extra plastic or cloth bags to reuse while you're visiting your local market!
