Budding Farmers

February 28, 2014  •

Inspired by her years of experience working within the local food system as a farmer, farmers’ market manager, community educator and good food activist, farmer-educator Monica Irwin founded Budding Farmers on the premise that all kids should know where their food comes from and why they should be eating healthy food.

The Budding Farmers program is geared for Pre-K through elementary-age children, with materials filled with beautiful illustrations and photographs designed to be a resource for years to come. It incorporates nutrition information, fun facts, growing guides, science projects, recipes, creative activities and more. In an innovative distribution approach, families can pick up their Budding Farmers materials right at their local farmers’ market or receive them directly with their boxes of CSA produce! Budding Farmers also works with childcare programs and community-based organizations.

In 2013, the Budding Farmers program was offered at over 20 farmers’ markets and CSA farms throughout the midwest and northeastern United States, reaching hundreds of children. The organization is focused on continuing to expand in order to offer its unique and engaging program to even more children across the country. Meanwhile, you can find a Virtual “Fun Book” on the website, featuring kid-friendly recipes, activities and videos, as well as additional tips and ideas on the Budding Farmers blog.

Visit the Budding Farmers website to discover how they are helping children and their families develop an appreciation and understanding of agriculture and healthy food that will last a lifetime!
